As we age, we start to accept our current situation. Our bodies are worn down, our knees hurt, and our backs protest all the time. A lot of us call this the “reality of aging.”
It’s true, we do get weaker as we age, but we tend to accelerate our aging by not doing anything about it. We may shrug our shoulders in our 40s, and then wake up in our 50s needing multiple medications. Aging by the normal standards doesn’t have to be the only path.
We can choose a better diet and physical fitness
Sedentary World
We live in a sedentary world. Most of us don’t move all that much, so we gain weight, have health problems, and wonder why we can’t do things that we used to.
It’s true, you cna exercise all the time and still have a major health problem, but exercise and a good diet reduce and even eliminate the chances that you will.
Move Now
Exercise gets more important as we age. Our bodies go through muscle wasting, which impacts the amount of muscle we have.
We need to exercise and eat more protein to maintain our muscle mass as we age. It’s critical to feeling your best. Losing muscle mass makes us weaker, and we feel “old” before our time.
Muscle wasting, or sarcopenia, typically begins around age 30–35 at a rate of 1–2% per year for the average person. After age 60, this rate can increase to 3% per year. This means that without interventions like strength training, adults can lose 4–6 pounds of muscle per decade. In some cases, sedentary adults can lose up to 30% of their muscle mass by age 75. — Via Google
Start Slow
Before any program, see your doctor. Underlying medical conditions may make it more difficult or even dangerous for you to do certain exercises. Start a slow program like walking, for example.
It’s better not to rush into fitness if you haven’t exercised much before, as you run the risk of serious injury. A couple of quick tips:
Talk to a trainer if you have never lifted weights before
Always hydrate
Consume whole foods
Stay consistent with exercise 3–4 times per week
Get medical advice if you have current health problems (crucial)
Avoid guru advice and crazy diet fads
Positive Mind
You CAN make real, lasting change. Nothing happens overnight, so stick with it. I’ve already lost weight on my fitness journey, and I’m documenting this on my new health site Aging Into Fitness.
Staying positive is the best thing you can do. Your negative mind wants to sabotage your progress.
Now go out there and start moving.
