As I embark on this health journey at 54, I wonder why I didn’t start earlier. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks when I focused on the main reason why I never exercised.
Mind Tricks
Our mind plays tricks on us because the negative mind is so powerful. We don’t exercise because our mind tells us not to. There’s two simple words that keep us from doing something about our health.
I Can’t
The phrase “I can’t” is why you fail at any sort of fitness journey. Let’s expand upon that more, so you see what the negative mind is doing to you.
I’m tired
It’s too hard
I don’t have time
My body hurts
When you reinforce negative feelings, it makes it even harder to lose weight or take up physical activity. What you’re doing is sabotaging any real efforts that you have made. Better phases might include:
I can lose weight
I’m making progress
I can do this
I’ll eat healthier foods
Frustration is Natural
It’s natural to feel frustrated when you exercise, but getting healthier is a process that takes a lot of time and well as energy. You have to be dedicated ott he process. What you’re doing is changing your entire lifestyle from an unhealthy one to a healthy one. You have to reinforce all the positives and don’t dwell on the negatives.
Earlier this month, I hurt my knee and couldn't do my normal walking routine. I was incredibly frustrated, but I stayed home to heal and focused on some upper-body weight training. I didn’t give up and stop exercising because of my condition. Sometimes, you do need to take a step back and heal, but don’t get frustrated by it.
Mindset is Everything
Your positive mind is the most powerful thing you possess. It will help you get the most out of exercise and your diet. The more you can reinforce your efforts, the better off you’re going to be.
I’m staying positive and exercising because at 54, my body needs it. A proper diet and exercise are the single most important things you can do right now to improve your life.
Do or Do Not
Exercise and better health won’t happen on their own. You have to be an active participant. You’ll have good days and bad days, but stick with it. You’re a LOT stronger than you realize. Don’t allow your negative mind to get the best of you. Reinforce yourself with positive thoughts, and you’ll see real progress.
