If you’re a part of the writing space for any length of time, you’ll notice that it’s mainly dominated by women. There’s still plenty of male writers, but for the most part, you’ll find way more women out there writing.
There’s a reason for this, and that’s because writing requires a person to tap into their emotions. Many men are unable to do this because of how they were raised.
Men live in a society where they have a constant drill sergeant shouting at them.
Get jacked now!
Dominate business, fool
Suck it up, wimp!
Don’t be such a pussy
On and on it goes, and because society frowns upon men expressing thier deep emotions, they suffer.
Men are more likely to abuse drugs, alcohol, take part in risky behaviors, or be violent. A lot of the violence seen by men is the inability to express emotions. The default emotion for many men is anger because it’s all they know. Writing can change that.
Men and Writing
Men who write are unique because they have found a way to express thier emotions positively and constructively. Writing requires deep reflection on the person you are and your perspectives on the world around you.
To tap into deep emotions, more men need to write. You don’t even need to put it online, although that’s a great option. By keeping a journal and writing down feelings, it can help men heal from deep wounds that they carry aorund with them.
Society and Writing
Many men won’t write because of the way society views them. Men don’t want to be seen as some sort of wimp, doing a “girly” activity like writing. If men are writing, they’re expected to write about guy activities like sports, cars, or write a shoot ‘em up adventure novel. Society sees male writers as different. I’ve met men who have a “deer-in-the-headlights” look on their faces when I tell them I write.
Go Write
Any man going through a struggle or just wants to communicate better should write. It opens up so much for you. Writing can be the single most important thing that heals you from trauma in your life. Men need to tap into their souls and find the person they truly are. Besides taking care of your physical health, your mental health might matter more.
So write.
