I’ve recently read some posts where writers have claimed to write a book with ChatGPT. While it’s not my place to tell a writer what they use to help them write, I don’t feel that writing with CHATGPT is in fact, writing.
Writing a book is a painful, slow process. I should know because I once wrote a full-length fiction novel. It took a long time and a lot of effort on my part. There was no software involved as the entire story came from my head.
All our famous writers from Hemingway to the horror stories of Stephen King were written by human beings. It’s those stories that allow us as human beings to connect with the writer. We get lost in the pages and those characters become our friends. we turn pages in anticipation of what will come next.
CHATGPT is Not Real
In the quest to make a quick buck, it may be tempting to write a novel with software, but it’s not real. You didn’t come up with the characters, the situations, and the plot. So the novel isn’t going to be authentic. There’s no sense of pride, no sense of accomplishment. AI makes you lazy and your book will reflect that. A character name generator is one thing, but writing an entire book with AI cheapens the writing process and you as a writer.
No Growth
This takes away from the entire writing process and doesn’t improve your writing. Taking the time to write my novel improved my writing by a wide margin. I can remember all the times I wanted to quit, but I stuck with the process and was amazed when the novel was finished. I didn’t think I would ever finish the book, but I did.
I could call myself a writer, as I had something written.
Makes You Lazy
An AI-written book makes you lazy. You’re not learning much when you use it. You’ll cut corners and probably won’t have the book you wanted in the first place. AI can’t get into the mind of a human and bring out those human emotions that make a book unique. If we get mor einvolved with AI writing then we’ll naturally write less human words and rely more on AI to do the work for us.
Writing is a struggle, but it’s a worthwhile one. It forces you to do the work.
No Accomplishment
The worst thing about AI is no accomplishment. I remember when I wrote a story about World War II in elementary school. I went to the library and poured over the books there to write it.
My dad has a vast book collection so I continued my research at home. When I got my paper back I raced home to show them the big B+ on the front of it. I felt awesome. I did the work, and I was rewarded for it.
AI robs you of accomplishment and leaves you with nothing.
No Thought About the Reader
I’m a reader and I don’t want to read stories written by AI. I’m not interested in them. Writing books is one thing that many of us strive for as writers. No AI can take away from that accomplishment.
Readers want authentic and real stories, we deserve as much.
If AI ever destroys the connection between read and author it will be a truly sad day.
I like the points you made in this post. I too wrote a 365+ page book once and it took a very long time. But afterwards I felt as if I accomplished something and like you say, you miss out on that if you use ChatGPT.
